Why Is the Ground Around Some Yellowstone Geysers Orange?

One of the first things that caught my attention in Yellowstone wasn’t just the geysers—it was the incredible colors surrounding them. The bright oranges, yellows, greens, and reds almost looked painted onto the landscape.
As it turns out, those colors aren’t created by the minerals in the water alone.
They’re alive.
The vibrant orange ground surrounding many of Yellowstone’s hot springs and geysers is created by thermophiles, heat-loving microorganisms that thrive in extreme temperatures. Different species of bacteria and archaea live in different temperature zones, and each community produces its own unique pigments.
Near the hottest water, temperatures can exceed 160°F (70°C), leaving very few organisms able to survive. As the water flows away from the source and gradually cools, more microbial communities begin to grow. These organisms produce pigments ranging from bright orange and yellow to green and brown, creating the colorful bands that make Yellowstone so recognizable.
These microorganisms aren’t just beautiful, they’re incredibly important. Scientists study them to better understand how life survives in extreme environments, and some have even led to major scientific discoveries. One famous example is Taq polymerase, an enzyme isolated from Yellowstone bacteria that made modern DNA testing and PCR technology possible.
It’s amazing to think that something as small as a microscopic organism can create one of the most iconic landscapes in the world.
The next time you visit Yellowstone, remember that the colorful ground beneath your feet isn’t just scenery, it’s a living ecosystem that has taken thousands of years to develop. That’s one of the many reasons it’s so important to stay on designated boardwalks and trails. A single footprint can permanently damage these fragile microbial mats.
Nature’s beauty often comes from the smallest things we can’t even see.
